Safety in bathing areas
The practice of marking out bathing areas with buoys stems from the need to provide bathers and swimmers with a safe area on beaches.
By law, these areas consist of a 200-metre- wide strip running parallel to the water’s edge. Sailing is not permitted except in specially designated access lanes. Along other areas of the coast, safety areas are 50 metres wide. The sailing prohibition applies to boats of all kinds including sailing boats and motor-powered vessels.
It is essential that these areas are adequately marked with buoys and that bathing boundaries and sailing access lanes can easily be seen.
